Create and Manage Business Intelligence Alerts

Storable Edge

Business Intelligence Alerts let you monitor a metric and receive a notification when it crosses a condition you set. Follow the instructions below to create alerts.

How to create an alert

  1. Open the dashboard that contains the metric you want to monitor. Make sure the dashboard is not in edit mode. You will not be able to create an alert while a dashboard is in edit mode.

  1. Hover over a tile and click the bell icon in the upper-right corner. You create alerts from supported dashboard tiles, not from an entire dashboard.

  1. Click New from the list if existing alerts have already been created for that tile.

  1. Set the alert condition, choose recipients, choose how often the alert should run, and enter a title for the alert.

You can create alerts that are based on comparisons of whole numbers and decimal values.

Conditions

  • Is greater than

  • Is less than

  • Is equal to

  • Is greater than or equal to

  • Is less than or equal to

If the query contains a date or time field, these additional conditions are available:

  • Increases by

  • Decreases by

  • Changes by (a combination of Increases by and Decreases by)

Alert frequency

Alerts can be set to be daily, weekly, monthly, or hourly. We recommend setting alerts to run once per day after 7 am local time. This will ensure you receive refreshed data.

  1. Click Save Alert.

Best practices

  • Data on Business Intelligence dashboards is refreshed once per day. We recommend setting alerts to run once daily after 7 am local time. This will ensure the data has been refreshed. Hourly alerts will not reflect updated data.

  • If an alert already exists, follow it by adding your email as a recipient instead of creating a duplicate alert. This will keep alerting clean for all users on your account.

When alerts are supported

Alerts work best when the tile is based on a clear numeric metric such as a count, amount, rate, or freshness measure. Good alert use cases include:

  • A count drops below an expected range.

  • A freshness metric shows data is older than expected.

  • A key KPI suddenly spikes or falls outside a normal range.

Limitations to know

You may not be able to create an alert in these situations:

  • The tile does not include a numeric measure or supported table calculation.

  • The tile uses an unsupported visualization type, such as certain custom visualizations or map charts.

  • The content has not been saved to a dashboard tile yet.

Troubleshooting

If you do not see the bell icon:

  • Confirm the tile is on a dashboard.

  • Confirm the tile includes a numeric result.

  • Confirm you're not in Edit mode.
